9 Tips for a Beautifully Organized Bathroom

When we moved into our house a few months ago, I was determined to organize my entire house as I unpacked. Except for a cupboard in the kitchen and my basement (which you really don't need to see), I succeeded. I expected it would make housework easier having a place for everything and everything in its place and I was right. My house stays clean with minimal effort, leaving me free to chase dreams and slay dragons all I want. Yay!

I'm especially proud of my bathrooms. Not only is everything easy to find, my organizational system is integrated into the decor. Beautiful and functional. What more could a girl want?

(Besides Oreos. Or a good book. Or freshly painted toenails.)

1. White is the new black.

Just kidding. I'm not that fashion-conscious. Besides, I can't stand wearing white because I know I'll spill salsa or chocolate syrup on it. However, using white linens and shower curtain in your bathroom instantly brightens a room and makes it look cleaner.

Plus you can bleach it all. Which is really nice when your three-year-old has a bloody nose in the middle of the night, leaving your bathroom look like a crime scene.

White also integrates beautifully into any color scheme. Accessories and wall hangings are perfect ways to add a splash of color and personality and are easily changed out to suit your mood.

2. Store things in plain sight.

I bought these wire baskets a few years ago and promptly put them on top of my kitchen cabinets where all they did was look pretty. It wasn't until we moved to this house that I realized they had a much better use - storing bathroom essentials. This one is in my boys' bathroom. I got tired of their toiletries sprawling across the counter top. It was unsightly and a pain to move everything to wipe down the counter. By containing it all in a single basket, it's visually more appealing and much easier to clean.

This one is tub-side. Clean, contained, and pretty, too!

3. Toiletries can be beautiful, too.

Bathrooms contain toiletries. It's a fact of life. You don't have to hide them away, though. Use them to bring color into the room. Cotton swabs come in dozens of colors as do flossers. Stick them in a clear container next to your sink. Bonus - you can easily see when you're running low so you can stock up again before you run out.

4. Make it easy for guests to find.

I hate having to go through someone else's bathroom to find a new roll of toilet paper. It feels like an intrusion of their personal space - a huge no-no in my book. Making my guests uncomfortable is the last thing I want to do, so I make sure anything a casual visitor may need is stored in plain sight.

5. Shelve it!

Adding shelves is a fantastic way to add storage space without taking up valuable floor space, especially in a small room. You can increase your storage potential even more with stacking baskets for your washcloths and hand towels.

6. Get creative.

When we built our house, we didn't realize how shallow one of the drawers in our master bath would be. My normal organizational methods wouldn't work, so I got creative.

I had a piece of shelf liner left over from another project, so I trimmed it to size and lined the bottom of the drawer. Then my makeup went in. The shelf liner keeps everything from slipping and sliding when the drawer opens and closes. What could have been a massive mess is now sleek and functional.

7. Contain it all.

Going back to our organizing basics, grouping like items together and containing them keep closets and cupboards tidy. Plastic storage drawers (labeled, of course) hold extra razors, toothpaste, pain killers, deodorant, and travel-size toiletries - perfect for a backpacking trip or house guests who've forgotten something. The baskets are for lotions, extra cotton balls and swabs, and cold medicines. When I'm looking for my foot cream or salt scrub, I pull out the entire basket and grab exactly what I need rather than digging through a bunch of free-standing bottles and knocking one over onto my toe.

And, yes, I roll my towels. They look nicer and don't slide all over the place.

8. Hamper time.

If I left it up to my boys to keep their bathroom clean, men in hazmat suits would be knocking on my door in a matter of days. They have a tendency to leave piles of dirty clothes and wet towels everywhere if I don't take preventative measures.

Every bathroom has a hamper stashed away either in a linen closet or under the sink. I love using laundry baskets for this because they're easily picked up and transported to this magical place called the "Laundry Room" where dirty things mysteriously become clean again.

9. Hook it!

My kids couldn't fold a towel and hang it on a towel rod to save their lives, but even my youngest can hang one on a hook. If you're not handy enough to install hooks without destroying the wall or you're renting and don't want to mark up the paint, use Command Hooks. They come in tons of colors and styles and they don't damage the wall when removed.

Wrapping up...

Organization doesn't have to be sterile and boring. Bring a beautiful functionality to your bathrooms and create an oasis in your own home. Reuse those baskets that have been sitting in your garage or basement gathering dust. Put those decorative jars to use. Get creative and give yourself the retreat you deserve!

Plus all that house cleaning time you save yourself by having an organized bathroom can be put to better use.

Oreos, good book, and painted toenails, here I come!
