Prompt: Sweetheart, what did you bury in the garden?
We worked side by side, planting spring annuals in our
flowerbeds. As I thrust my spade into the soil, I heard it – muffled and
strangled.
“Don’t worry…”
My hand froze and I glanced at Nick. He continued to pat
down the soil around the marigolds, engrossed in the task.
I carefully deepened the hole, holding my breath. It couldn’t
be. I buried that thing months ago.
“…be happy…”
I gasped.
Nick’s full attention was on me this time.
“Sweetheart,” he said, uncertainly. “Doesn’t that sound like
my singing fish? The one you said was lost in the move?”
Crap.
Busted.
*Flash Fiction is fiction under a thousand words. I participate in a weekly prompt that's limited to a mere one hundred words. That's crazy short. You can check out the other participants' stories via their links on the WonHundred Word Wednesdays Facebook page here.*
